What RTP does and does not tell you
- RTP is an average over millions of bets. It says what a game pays back in the long run.
- It does not say what one session pays back. In a short session luck decides most of the result: you can finish well ahead, or lose far more than the expected loss.
How the number is worked out
Every casino game keeps a small share of all the money bet on it. That share is the house edge. The rest goes back to players as winnings, and that share is the RTP, short for return to player. The two always add up to 100%.
- House edge = 100% − RTP. Enter either one and the calculator works out the other.
- Total wagered = average bet × number of bets. If you enter bets per hour and hours, the number of bets is one multiplied by the other.
- Expected loss = total wagered × house edge.
A worked example
A slot has an RTP of 96%, so its house edge is 4%. You place 500 bets of 2.00 each.
- Total wagered: 2.00 × 500 = 1,000.00
- Expected loss: 1,000.00 × 4% = 40.00
Total wagered can be far more than the money you sat down with. Winnings that you bet again count again, and the edge is taken from every bet.
What RTP does and does not mean
- It is a long-run average. RTP is measured over millions of bets. Over that many, the share paid back gets close to the stated figure.
- It is not a promise for one session. In a short session luck decides most of the result. You can finish well ahead, or lose far more than the expected loss. The expected loss is the middle of a wide range, not a forecast.
- It is not the share of your deposit you get back. RTP applies to each bet. The more times your money goes round, the more of it the edge takes.
- It does not make a game due. Each bet stands alone. A run of losses does not make a win more likely, and a run of wins does not make one less likely.
- It can differ from one casino to the next. The same game can run at more than one RTP setting. Use the figure on the info page of the game where you play.
